The Englisch-deutsche Studienausgabe der Dramen Shakespeares has the aim of bringing home to German readers the meaning of Shakespeare's texts as precisely as possible, and to offer additional information useful for their understanding. It offers the unique feature of a prose translation that, together with footnotes, is entirely in the service of explaining meaning.

See Brönnimann, Werner. “Think-Along Edition: The Bilingual Studienausgabe of Shakespeare.” In Shakespeare and the Language of Translation, ed. A. J. Hoenselaars. Rev. ed. London: Arden Shakespeare, 2012. 184-98.

I was involved with the project from the beginning. In 1971-72 I wrote its style sheet, and in 1976 published the first volume, Othello, in a series that now runs to more than thirty volumes. As a referee and as a member of the advisory board I helped with the preparation of several volumes. I retired in 2012. I have occasionally published articles on issues concerning the edition.
